Hawthorn’s spiritual home Glenferrie Oval and its surrounds will be given a green makeover thanks to a $2 million water project.
The Glenferrie Recreation Precinct — which includes the famous football ground, the Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre, Hawthorn Community Gardens, the Grace Park Law Tennis Club and more — received $1 million from the State Government last week to harvest stormwater, rainwater and recycled water.
This money was in addition to a $1.01m contribution from Boroondara Council.
Stage one of the project — which the State Government money is for — will see stormwater extracted from a drain running through Grace Park, so it can be stored and used to irrigate the park and Glenferrie Oval.
Excess water will be transported to other parks within the municipality.
The second stage involves captured stormwater being treated so it can be used in the Hawthorn leisure centre’s public pool.
